The Peaceful Eve

September 10, 2001, from Little Round Top, Gettysburg.

Right about this time on September 10, 2001, I was standing on Little Round Top in Gettysburg watching the sunset. Later, I always thought of this photo as “The Last Night of Innocence,” which of course is ridiculous since the world was already full of terrible things. But there’s something about the frozen moment of this snapshot—everyone still alive, the hijackers still in their hotels, people enjoying dinner at Windows on the World, life achingly normal.

The next morning I was back on Little Round Top, taking photos, gazing out over the Valley of Death and ruminating about war and destruction; and all the while the Twin Towers were burning and I didn’t even know it.
